Investment pays off as Pre-Met stamps out £500,000 new business haul

Increased capacity, new machinery and process improvements support six wins across automotive, aerospace, defence and rail.

Investment in our Redditch manufacturing facility has helped Pre-Met secure £500,000 in new orders, supporting growth with existing customers and opening opportunities in new markets.

Our 64-strong team at Studley Road has increased capacity and expanded our ability to produce larger, heavier and more complex components.

Investing in customer requirements

The addition of an AgieCharmilles wire erosion machine has played a key role in this progress. A Cincinnati Milacron 75-tonne press with an automated feed will further strengthen our production capacity to meet growing demand.

Four new supervisory and maintenance roles have been created as a result, with the firm still looking for a further power press setter and a toolmaker.

“We have worked really hard to identify new markets and how we can strengthen how we support existing customers,” explained James Leng, Managing Director of Pre-Met. “It’s an approach that has started to pay off, with six wins across automotive, aerospace, defence and rail. In fact, the latter has seen us take on larger, more complex work for a long-term client that was only made possible by the investment and process improvements we’ve made.”

He continued: “With so many external pressures on industry, it’s a sign the team we’ve got can respond and find ways to make savings, work smarter and, through additional machinery, secure new orders.”

New machinery and process improvements have helped Pre-Met secure £500,000 in new orders.

Improving how we work

Over the past twelve months, we have integrated the acquired Quality Springs & Pressings operation into our Studley Road site.

This has involved reorganising production, modernising our tooling and introducing process improvements to reduce costs and waste. Alongside new machinery, these changes help us respond to customer requirements and support higher production volumes.

Quality throughout production

Pre-Met holds ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and IATF 16949 certifications, covering quality management, environmental management and automotive quality requirements. We have also signed up to JOSCAR, the supplier qualification system for aerospace, defence and security.

For James, quality depends on the approach taken throughout the business: “It’s all about the culture we instil and the desire from everyone in the business to deliver right first-time parts to customers.”

Operating in Redditch since 1973, Pre-Met has grown from manufacturing high-value pens, cufflinks and telecommunications parts into a supplier serving aerospace, defence, mobility, medtech, construction, electrical and transport customers worldwide.

Investment in wire erosion technology supports Pre-Met’s ability to manufacture more complex components.
